Carlsbad
began as a rural agricultural community and Santa Fe Railroad whistle
stop, a place people passed through on their way to points north or south.
In recent years, farms and flower fields have given way to corporate
headquarters, and the Legoland theme park draws visitors from around the
world. Also, The Carlsbad's beaches remain one of San Diego's best
kept secrets.
Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Established to preserve Carlsbad Cavern and numerous other caves
within a Permian-age fossil reef, the park contains more than 100
known caves, including Lechuguilla Cave the nation's deepest
limestone cave at 1,567 feet (478m) and fourth longest. Carlsbad
Cavern, with one of the world's largest underground chambers and
countless formations, is highly accessible, with a variety of tours
offered year-round.
Carlsbad State Beaches
This San Diego beach has popular
campsites on a cliff overlooking the ocean. There are stairs
provided to access the secluded beach to swim, surf, skin dive, fish
or picnic. The beach is open to the public but there are no day-use
facilities. South Carlsbad State Beach is located at Poinsettia Lane
approximately 3 miles south of Carlsbad Inn Beach Resort and Hotel
on Carlsbad Boulevard.
Carlsbad Flower Fields
Take yourself out of the ordinary and spend a few
hours in one the Flower Fields. Kids can run and adults can linger
in the 50 acres of color in bloom on a hillside overlooking the
Pacific Ocean, with a special nursery, garden, and gift shop by
Armstrong Garden Centers, and festivals throughout the season. For
over sixty years, the rolling hills of Carlsbad has been a
spectacular and coordinated display of natural color and beauty. The
nearly fifty acres of Giant Tecolote Ranunculus flowers that make up
The Flower Fields at Carlsbad Ranch are in a full bloom for
approximately six to eight weeks each year - from early March
through early May - literally bringing the famous fields back to
life. This annual burst of color, which has become part of the
area's local heritage, is also one of nature's official ways of
announcing the arrival of spring.
